What is a cab partition and what is it used for?
A cab partition is located directly behind the driver's and passenger's seats and separates the cab from the rest of the vehicle – meaning the cargo area, living space, or passenger area, depending on how the vehicle is used.
In most cases, it is a textile system, i.e., a curtain that can be opened and closed, thereby creating a clear physical separation between these two areas.
A special feature compared to other solutions is its dual function:
A cab partition can be used not only when stationary but also while driving. This fundamentally distinguishes it from classic alternatives such as thermal mats or external covers.
Essentially, a cab partition serves several functions:

Why do you even need something like this?

While driving
While driving, the greatest advantage lies in reducing the space to be temperature-controlled.
If the rear area is separated, the heating or air conditioning only needs to regulate the cab itself. This means:

However, this only works reliably if the partition is sufficiently sealed.

The actual problem in the cab
The cab is the thermally weakest area in the entire vehicle.
The main reasons for this are:

Large glass surfaces, especially the windshield

Poorly insulatable zones in the dashboard area

Air vents and other penetrations in the front area
This presents a problem in both winter and summer, as temperature differences arise particularly quickly here and energy is lost.
In comparison, other areas of the vehicle can be controlled much better – especially:

These surfaces can be relatively well insulated, if desired. The cab, however, remains a weak point due to its design.
Why a cab partition is so effective
The solution is simple: the cab is separated from the rest of the vehicle.
This decouples the problematic area from the actual interior – and that is precisely the decisive advantage.
What alternatives are there – and how should they be classified?
When it comes to shielding or insulating the cab, there are essentially three approaches:

These three systems differ fundamentally in where they are applied to the vehicle and how they are used. A direct comparison shows that each solution has its own strengths and limitations.
External cover
External covers are placed over the front and side windows and fastened from the outside, usually with straps, tabs, or by clamping them into the doors.
One disadvantage is the effort involved in handling. Attaching and removing them takes some time and is not always entirely straightforward, especially when alone. Furthermore, this solution is clearly visible from the outside. It is immediately apparent that the vehicle is being used accordingly.
An advantage is that with many systems, areas such as air inlets are also covered, which can be a noticeable added value, especially in winter. Overall, external covers are characterized by very high effectiveness. Since the cover is on the outside, heat and cold are already intercepted before they reach the window, creating a very high insulation effect.
Thermal mats
Thermal mats are attached to the windows from the inside and cover them completely.
A disadvantage here is also the handling effort. Each window must be covered individually, and after use, the mats must be removed and stored. This requires additional storage space and is not always practical in everyday life. From the outside, they are usually visible, more or less so depending on the design. This ranges from striking reflective material to more discreet dark variants.
In addition, quality plays a crucial role. With simple systems, the fit can be limited, meaning the windows are not completely or cleanly covered. Especially here, a good fit is essential, as the effect directly depends on it. The attachment can also be a weak point, for example with solutions using suction cups that can come loose over time, especially on large surfaces such as the windshield.
Another point is that thermal mats focus exclusively on the windows. Other areas of the cab, such as ventilation inlets or structurally difficult-to-insulate zones in the dashboard area, are not taken into account.
The advantage lies in solid insulation performance and very good darkening.
Cab partition / partition curtain
The cab partition takes a different approach. Instead of insulating the windows themselves, the entire cab is separated.
A possible disadvantage is the price. High-quality systems are structurally complex because they must be precisely adapted to the interior contours of the respective vehicle to achieve the tightest possible seal. The material used also plays a decisive role, especially if a noticeable insulation effect is to be achieved. Simpler variants offer correspondingly less to no performance.
The advantage lies in the flexibility of the system. A cab partition can be used both when stationary and while driving and is always available. There is no additional storage space requirement, as the system is permanently integrated into the vehicle. Operation is quick and uncomplicated.
Another significant advantage is its inconspicuousness. From the outside, it is usually not recognizable that a partition is being used. The vehicle still looks like a normal van, with no visible signs of special use.
Typical examples of vehicle-specific solutions include a cab partition for Mercedes Vito V-Class or a cab partition for VW T5, T6, T7, where the systems are precisely matched to the respective interior contours.
Classification in direct comparison
In direct comparison, the systems can be classified as follows:

What to look for when buying a cab partition?
Not every cab partition automatically meets the requirements placed on it. The differences lie in the details – especially in terms of fit, material, and construction.
Fit and tightness
A crucial point is the accuracy of fit.
The partition should be adapted as precisely as possible to the interior contours of the vehicle. This is the only way to truly cleanly separate the area. Open gaps or poorly closing transitions increase light ingress and significantly reduce the thermal effect.
Caution is advised, especially with universal solutions, as they rarely fit optimally.
Material and construction
The material used largely determines the effectiveness of the system.
Simple fabrics generally only offer privacy. If the interior is to be reliably darkened, a correspondingly light-proof material is required. If a thermal effect is also to be achieved, a multi-layer construction with a suitable insulation structure is needed.
The systems differ significantly here – both in performance and price.
Installation
A central point is the type of fastening.
In many cases, installation requires intervention in the interior, for example by drilling, attaching snap fasteners, or other mechanical guides and fastenings. This involves technical effort and must be carried out cleanly.
This can be problematic, especially with leased vehicles. When reselling, there can also be disadvantages if changes have been made to the vehicle.
In addition, improper installation carries the risk of causing permanent damage, for example if holes have to be drilled in body parts.
System quality and requirements
If it's merely about basic privacy, there are very affordable solutions that fundamentally serve their purpose but come with limitations in installation and use.
Higher-quality systems, however, make significantly better use of the possibilities offered by the cab separation concept. This includes:

The decisive factor is the usage scenario.
If the cab is actively integrated into the living space, as is the case with many classic motorhomes, thermal mats or external covers are usually the more obvious solution.
However, a cab separation can also be useful in such cases, for example, as an additional measure at very low outside temperatures, such as during winter camping. The reason is that, due to its design, the cab is the most difficult area when it comes to insulation. This is precisely where a separation can specifically target this problem area by separating it from the rest of the vehicle.
A cab separation is particularly interesting for anyone who values discretion. From the outside, it is generally not recognizable that the interior is shielded. The vehicle looks like a normal parked van, whether it is simply parked or has people inside.
Another decisive advantage is immediate availability. The separation is ready for use at any time and can be used without additional effort. Unlike other solutions, there is no need to attach and detach it. At the same time, no additional storage space is required, as the system is permanently integrated into the vehicle.
Quality is always important. Simple systems do not utilize the potential of a cab separation. Only higher-quality solutions offer:
