About CENTAUR - Origin, Development & Quality

Between everyday life and camping

We live in two worlds with our vans.

In everyday life, we go shopping, take the kids to sports, or stand in front of Ikea to load a cabinet. A few days later, we might drive into the countryside, stay at a campsite once or twice a year, or visit friends in a city who don't have space in their apartment, and we don't feel like staying in a hotel.

For traveling, overnight stays, and camping, there are systems with strong insulation performance. Thermal mats, for example. Technically powerful, reliable, robust. They insulate windows well and provide good darkening. And we all know that feeling of how much fun it is when the equipment can do its job. Good technology simply feels good.

However, in everyday life, these very solutions are often bulky or cumbersome. You have to insert them, remove them again, store them. Insulate windows – yes, but with effort. Many are looking for alternatives to thermal mats.

We then usually end up with curtains, which are cozy and pleasant to use. They work simply and naturally in daily use because they are easy to operate at any time. You can quickly darken the van and have privacy without much fuss. However, their limitations quickly become apparent when traveling and staying overnight, especially when temperatures become more extreme and real insulation is required.

I wanted the advantages of both worlds. Blackout and insulation. Always available, comfortable, and cozy. But please without drilling. So everything, without compromise.

From DIY to product idea

Initially, I just wanted to help myself. So I started tinkering, the way people in the van and camper world do. Anyone who's ever tried to build their own van curtains or develop an alternative to thermal mats knows how quickly you reach your limits.

But with each step, my demands grew. I wanted to include more and more: more features, more comfort, more performance. I wanted a system that reliably darkened the windows, kept out the heat in summer, insulated in winter, and could still remain permanently installed in the vehicle. I wanted to convert my van into a true stealth campervan. In short, I was looking for the perfect all-rounder.

This made the implementation increasingly complicated and extensive. What started as a small DIY idea had become a full-fledged development project. It was no longer just about a curtain for my van, but about a well-designed system for campervans that combines everyday life and travel.

At the same time, discussions with others repeatedly revealed a noticeable interest in such a solution. Many were looking for an alternative to traditional thermal mats or for blackout solutions for their Mercedes, VW, or Ford, without having to drill holes or constantly modify the vehicle.

At some point, I decided to take the plunge and turn it into a real product.

The project was given a name: CENTAUR. A hybrid being that unites two worlds and quite aptly describes the tension between the different demands.

Many prototypes, revisions, new approaches, discarded ideas, lucky coincidences, and a few additional grey hairs followed.

Design and manufacturing

The result of this work is a system that accurately reflects the requirements with which I started.

These objectives shaped the design. The three-layer structure, the integrated magnetic guide, and the precision fit are complex to manufacture, but necessary for the system to function reliably.

Furthermore, it was important to me to set up production responsibly. Manufacturing takes place in Germany, using carefully selected materials and under fair conditions. No mass-produced goods, but small batches with high standards.

The result is a system that has not been optimized for minimum price, but is capable of fully meeting the original requirements.

It is functionally well-designed, uncomplicated in daily use, and efficient when traveling.
